Why Does $ Represent So Many Currencies?
The dollar sign is used by more than 20 currencies around the world, including the US dollar, Canadian dollar, Australian dollar, Mexican peso, and several Caribbean and South American currencies. This happened because many of these currencies were historically pegged to or modelled on the Spanish American peso, which used a similar mark, and the symbol simply carried over as new national currencies were introduced. To avoid confusion, many countries add a letter prefix, such as A$ for Australian dollar, C$ for Canadian dollar, or NZ$ for New Zealand dollar.
The yen and yuan symbol ¥ is shared for a similar historical reason, since both currencies descended from the same East Asian monetary tradition, while the Korean won ₩ is used by both North and South Korea despite the countries having completely separate economies.
